The Guernsey Swimming Club recently held its much-anticipated Open Water Championships for 2024. Swimmers took to the water over 5 weekends at Havelet, Rousse, Pembroke, Portelet and Perelle over a range of distances varying from 500m to 1500m.
On the Rousse to Amarreurs swim, our youngest competitor, Poppy Sargent aged 9, showcased remarkable endurance, finishing with a commendable time of 19.34. Her first time competing in these Open Water events.
The Havelet dash saw swimmers fighting for places with Imogen Bleasdale and Izzie Grierson both finishing in 7.28, closely followed by Callum Penney and Rudie Sturgeon with a time of 8:21.
The final event of the Championships saw swimmers take on the longest of swims at Perelle, covering a distance of 1500m in open water. The event was graced with near-perfect conditions, providing a refreshing swim for all competitors. Island Games hopeful Ben Coulson finished first, completing the distance in 21.35. Hot on his heels, both Callum Penney and Eileen Chapman raced to the finish both finishing in 24.20.
This annual club event challenges participants with a variety of distances and conditions, allowing them to experience the beauty and thrill of open water swimming. From our youngest competitor, to seasoned swimmers, everyone has the chance to test their skills and enjoy the camaraderie and spirit of competition. The championships not only highlight the talent within our club but also encourage swimmers to embrace the adventure and joy of open water swimming.
We would love to see even more swimmers, from 9 years old and up, joining us in future events from the club. Additionally, we are in need of more helpers on the water. If you have a kayak or SUP and would like to support our events, please get in touch.
