Our longest-ever serving volunteer, Johanna Norman Our longest-ever serving volunteer, Johanna Norman, was today awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for her services to swimming! 🏅

Representatives from the Guernsey Swimming Club were there to support Jo on this great occasion.

A well-deserved recognition of a lady who has devoted more than 50 years to the Guernsey Swimming Club, helping thousands of islanders learn a vital, lifesaving skill. Many of those swimmers have gone on to compete at the Island Games, Commonwealth Games, and the Olympics. 🏊‍♀️✨

She’s been with the Club since the outdoor days of La Vallette when her two children first started, watching us go from strength to strength as indoor venues opened up to make the sport year-round. Jo originally qualified as a teacher, coach, and judge just to help out and give herself 'something to do' while her children swam. She’s served on the committee since 1977 and also held the mantle of President for a number of years. Her grandchildren have grown up through the Club too - offering their own help on the poolside after catching the volunteering bug, with one now serving as our Vice-President.

Jo continues to be the absolute heart and soul of the Guernsey Swimming Club. Having her on the poolside to this day is a true testament to her love for the sport and our Club.

It’s been long overdue, but we are so incredibly proud of Jo today.

Words aren’t really enough to show our gratitude, but, from all of us, thank you Jo 💚
