The Guernsey Swimming Club is delighted to announce the success of this year’s BWCI Open Castle Swim, which took place on Sunday 17th August 2025. The event, one of the island’s most popular and historic community fundraisers, saw over 600 swimmers take to the water in support of three local charities: Dementia Friendly Guernsey, Headway Guernsey and the Guernsey Welfare Service.
This year’s swim raised an impressive total, with the Guernsey Swimming Club rounding up the amount so that each charity received £2,600 to support their vital work within the community. The event, proudly sponsored by BWCI, continues to grow in both participation and generosity, bringing together swimmers, volunteers, families and supporters for a celebration of Guernsey’s community spirit and love of the sea.
Guernsey Swimming Club Director and event organiser Kevin Penney said: “It was fantastic to see so many members of the public taking part. The BWCI Open Castle Swim goes from strength to strength every year and it’s a great family-friendly event that really captures the community spirit of the island. This is the most we’ve ever raised and been able to donate to our chosen charities. We’d like to thank everyone who donated, as well as our event sponsor BWCI for their continued support. A huge thank you also goes to all the volunteers, both on land and at sea, who make this event possible. Without them, we simply couldn’t host such a fantastic community event.”
Among the many inspiring stories from the day, 89-year-old Patsy Self was awarded the Bill Green Memorial Trophy after becoming the oldest swimmer to complete the course. Her determination and enthusiasm captured the admiration of fellow swimmers and spectators alike, embodying the true spirit of the event.
This year’s BWCI Open Castle Swim once again highlighted the generosity and unity of the Guernsey community. What began as a local challenge has become one of the most anticipated events on the island’s calendar, combining fitness, fun and fundraising in a unique setting that celebrates Guernsey’s coastline.
The Guernsey Swimming Club has already begun preparations for the 2026 BWCI Open Castle Swim, with further details to be announced in the new year. The club looks forward to building on this year’s success and welcoming even more swimmers, volunteers and supporters to next year’s event.
