Saffery Champness Bay Swims Perelle

The last of the Guernsey Swimming Club bay swims took place last Sunday morning, a gloomy start to the day with a 1500m swim in slightly choppy sea to the pole in the middle of the bay and back. 34 started the swim with the keen swimmers sprinting a head. As the swim is over 1000m age restrictions take place and swimmers must be 12 years and over to compete.

Becky Simmons and Kevin Penny battled it out to the pole setting a quick pace, both swimmer going slightly off course on the way back Becky to the right and Keving to the left, correcting her course Becky managed to beat Kevin to the finish in a time of   19.58 .Joint third were Callum Penny and Gareth Andrews in a time of 21.03. The Perelle swim is used as a guide for the Annual Guernsey Swimming Club Herm swim hopefully taking place this weekend, weather permitting fingers crossed. Although 34 started the swim only 32 finished with 12 year old twins Veronica and Nadine Chapman finding the distance and cold just a bit too much but their determined swimming companion Millie Wenlock finished the swim in a time of 46.00 just behind her father Tony.

The Saffery Champness bay swims are a set of 5 swims, Rousse to Les Ammarreus, Pembroke to L’Ancresse, Portlett to the cup and saucer, Closed Castle and Perelle, distances range from 700m to 1500m and swimmers need to get use the difference between swimming in a nice warm pool and ever changing conditions the sea throw at them including the temperature. Points are awarded for each swim and trophies are awarded to the winners of the different age groups at the Guernsey Swimming Club annual dinner and prize giving held in January.
