The Guernsey Swimming Club recently took 28 swimmers to Jersey to compete at the 38th Annual Tigers Open Meet. Our swimmers returned with 98 medals consisting of 32 gold, 39 silver and 27 bronze as well as 156 personal best swims from their entered times and 3 records being broken!
The competition involved swimmers from Jersey, Guernsey and Wales, competing at both Level 2 and Level 3 over the weekend of 25-27 October and the team achieved some amazing results.
Club Captain Charlie-Joe Hallett stormed to victory claiming 4 golds and 3 silvers over the weekend. In the 50m breaststroke he claimed top spot in a new record time 29.30 smashing the record previously set in 2012 by Matthew Brehaut. He also broke Tom Hollingsworth’s 2012 record in the 100m breaststroke in 1.03.24. Charlie-Joe also competed in the senior Skins event at the end of the meet and was second overall. Brother Ronny had some fantastic swims and took nine seconds off his 200m breaststroke entered time claiming gold.
Samuel Lowe medalled in all 10 events over the weekend and took 10 seconds off his entered time in the 400m IM and 9 seconds off the 400m freestyle. He also competed in the senior Skins event, taking part in some very exciting races.
Kevin Penney, competing in the 16 and over age group, took part in five events over the weekend producing some excellent times and medalled in all taking home 3 gold and 2 silvers.
Lennon Williams took 28 seconds off his 400m freestyle claiming the bronze medal. He also had some great swims in the 200m IM and freestyle events. Joshua Dunning took a huge 46 seconds off his 400m freestyle time claiming a well deserved gold medal. Ben Coulson had some great swims smashing his entered times in the 200m IM and 100m freestyle events.
Laura Le Cras took 6 golds away from the weekend while also breaking the record in the 50m breaststroke which has stood since 1999 by Helen Watts. Laura also competed in the senior Skins event and was second overall. Her brother Luke had some excellent swims producing a 14 second PB in the 200m breaststroke event and also took part in the junior Skins event showing some great potential.
Evie Sturgeon stormed to the end of the lane in the 200m freestyle claiming a new personal best time of 2.31.90 taking 19 seconds off her entered time and taking home the gold medal. Morgan Hamon took home the gold medal in the 400m IM touching in 6.21.32 taking off 12 seconds from her entered time – a fantastic race.
Thomas Stewart had a massive PB in the 200m breaststroke, claiming bronze in 3.41.33. Brother Robbie took home the silver in the 50m freestyle event.
Competing for the first time in this meet, Emma Bourgaize took a bronze medal in the 100m backstroke taking 18 seconds off her entered time. Team mate Grace Reid took 21 seconds off her 200m freestyle, showing great improvement. Oliver Stephens also had some great swims and took 20 seconds off his 200m IM.
