The Guernsey Swimming Club Championships kicked off with an action-packed two sessions, delivering outstanding performances from swimmers across all age groups. The event saw a wave of personal bests, thrilling races, and historic record-breaking swims, setting an exciting tone for the season ahead.
Chloe Bown was the star of the championships, rewriting club history with a series of phenomenal swims. In Session 1, she made headlines by breaking the Female 16 & Over 100m IM record, touching in 1:03.48 – an improvement on Laura Le Cras’ 2019 record of 1:08.10. She didn’t stop there, going on to break records in the 100m backstroke (1:03.39) and 50m freestyle (26.87) during Session 2.
One of the standout moments of the weekend came in the Female 16 & Over 200m Individual Medley, where Bown delivered a historic swim, clocking 2:20.37. This shattered a record that had stood since 1983, when Cate Jackson set the time of 2:26.97. As one of the club’s longest-standing records, its fall marks a new era of swimming excellence for the Guernsey Swimming Club.
Head Coach Heather Jackson praised Bown’s achievement, stating:
“Chloe’s performance in the 200m IM was nothing short of phenomenal. To break a record that has stood for 42 years is an incredible achievement and a testament to her dedication, hard work, and technical excellence. Cate’s record was a longstanding mark of excellence in our club’s history, and for Chloe to surpass it by such a significant margin is truly special. She continues to set the bar higher, inspiring the next generation of our swimmers.”
Beyond Bown’s record-breaking swims, several other athletes delivered notable performances. Lily Smith achieved the biggest personal best of the weekend, slicing an incredible 45 seconds off her 200m IM time. Meanwhile, Scarlett-Rose Foss and Grace King impressed in their age groups, with strong swims in the 100m backstroke and 200m IM, while Samuel Cann dominated the 14-15 Boys 200m IM and 50m Butterfly, securing first-place finishes.
The Guernsey Swimming Club Championships provided a thrilling start to 2025, with swimmers showcasing determination, skill, and a promising future for the club.
