Jo Norman – Sports Volunteer of the Year 2024

Director, committee member and coach, Jo Norman attended the 2024 Guernsey Press Pride of Guernsey Awards after being shortlisted to the final three. Jo was nominated by the Guernsey Swimming Club.

Named as an ‘essential’ to Guernsey Swimming Club, Jo Norman has been nominated for Sports Volunteer of the Year.
The 79-year-old has volunteered for nearly 50 years after initially joining when the club was short on teachers in 1976.
She finds teaching children how to swim the ‘most rewarding part’ of the role and has seen generations of swimmers through the ‘small pool’.
‘A number of swimmers she currently teaches are the children of swimmers she taught in the past,’ said Anne Cann, who put forward the nomination.
‘Jo is an essential and well-known part of the Guernsey Swimming Club and it would be great to see her getting some recognition for the role she has played within the club in the past 48 years.’
Jo has taken on the role of swim teacher, timekeeping officiant and president, leading the GSC between 1994 and 2012.
Now, she provides support and guidance to new volunteers and continues to teach children aged four to six at Beau Sejour.

We are thrilled to announce that a panel of judges has awarded Jo the 2024 Sports Volunteer of the Year! This prestigious recognition reflects her unwavering dedication and countless contributions to the Guernsey Swimming Club. A massive congratulations to Jo, and heartfelt thanks for the many years of service that have inspired and strengthened our club.

Jo would like to thank everyone who initially voted for her, leading to her being shortlisted for the award. She has read all of your congratulatory messages and deeply appreciates your kind words and support.
