The Guernsey Swimming Club held its Annual Awards Evening on Saturday 13th January 2024. The night recognised both swimming and volunteering achievements to its members. Below is a list of winners from the evening.
Brown Family Trophy
First up is the Brown Family Trophy. Now this trophy has been awarded for a number of different things over the years. This year, the Directors have decided to award this trophy to one of our younger swimmers that goes above and beyond, both in the pool and out of it.
This swimmer doesn’t let much get in their way and overcomes a lot to enjoy the sport that they do. This love of the sport has also extended to always offering their help when not swimming and at social events they attend. They are always happy, bubbly, and sure to put a smile on your face. They are a pleasure to teach and a joy to have on poolside at competitions.
In 2023, they took on an epic challenge to raise money for charity and their fundraising efforts haven’t stopped there. We look forward to seeing what you can achieve this year and in the years to come.
The Brown Family Trophy is awarded to Jude Marley.
Jill Ogier Memorial Trophy
The Jill Ogier Memorial Trophy is for both commitment and achievement for girls under 12.
This year the trophy is being awarded to a swimmer that enters competitions, attends lessons regularly and continuously works hard to be the best they can be. They continue to improve gaining new personal best times as well as working on their techniques in the water.
This year, not leaving one out when they both do so well, we award the Jill Ogier Memorial Trophy to Niamh and Maisy Rich.
Kay Le Patourel Memorial Trophy
Next is the Kay Le Patourel Memorial Trophy which is the same as the Jill Ogier Memorial Trophy but for boys under 12.
We have many swimmers in this age range that work hard, turn up to training and do well in competitions. But one has stood out to both coaches and Directors. This swimmer ensures they are being the best they can be, both in the water and out of it. They continue to improve with nothing being too much trouble and they take it all in their stride.
They attend as many training sessions as possible, rarely missing out and are a pleasure to teach. We look forward to watching you grow in the pool and are excited for what comes in the future for you.
This year, we award the Kay Le Patourel Memorial Trophy to Tate Loveridge.
Portsmouth North Sea Trophy
This year we are awarding the Portsmouth North Sea Trophy for achievement to a swimmer that has excelled themselves throughout 2023.
They attend all meets, including travelling to Hampshire and Regionals. They have now been invited to be a part of the National pathway which helps swimmers onto British Swimming’s World Class Programmes. Continuing to improve, this swimmer has endless possibilities ahead of them – all while doing it with a smile.
This year, we are awarding the Portsmouth North Sea Trophy to Emma Bourgaize.
Joan Wilkinson Memorial Trophy
Next up we have the Joan Wilkinson Memorial Trophy which is presented to a member of the club that we feel have dedicated themselves above and beyond the call of duty.
Starting as a parent bringing their children to swimming lessons, they noticed a need within the club. Without hesitation, they offered their time, and from that moment, their dedication to the club has only deepened. Transitioning into a regular poolside teacher, they’ve played a crucial role in the club’s ability to welcome new swimmers. Their commitment doesn’t stop there though as they also extend their help to various lanes and groups when needed.
They stepped up and joined the committee. They keep us on our toes, pushing the club to be better in every aspect. They have taken on the task of ensuring that the club remains policy-compliant. And let’s not forget the seemingly endless paperwork required for our Swim Mark accreditation – a task they tackle with diligence each year.
This year we would like to present the Joan Wilkinson Memorial Trophy for dedication to Anne Cann.
Green Trophy
The Green Trophy is presented for the most meritorious swim.
How could we pick just one swim when 2 stood out leaps and bounds above the rest.
These swims took place at the Island Games, and with all the excitement of a home games, these races are still some that we talk about today and we can still remember the feeling around the pool when we were all celebrating with them.
These 2 swimmers battled it out over the 50m and 100m breaststroke events. Sibling rivalry was high as Charlie-Joe claimed gold in the 50m breaststroke in an all comers pool record and Ronny claiming silver – only 0.06 seconds behind. Ronny then claimed gold in the 100m breaststroke with an all comers pool record and Charlie-Joe touching in second.
As a club we are extremely proud of what these 2 swimmers have achieved and thank them for some fantastic swims at the Island Games last year. This year the Green Trophy for most meritorious swim goes to both Charlie-Joe and Ronny Hallett.
Lang Family Trophy
The next trophy is for sportsmanship. Now, this was a very tough decision by the Directors. As a small club we are encouraged to support one another in everything that we do but one event in particular from 2023 has stood out above all others and needed to be rewarded.
They made up the Sure Annual Junior Meet Team and between them ensured lanes were covered to support their team mates. They ensured that the overall vibe of the team was high and improved with the afternoons races – even after a long day. It can get loud at the Junior Meet, and those that have had the pleasure of watching the relays will know how loud it can get. These swimmers ensured that their voices were heard and their team mates in the water were spurred onto the finish.
They were a pleasure to have on the poolside and did our club proud, both in the water and out of it with their attitudes. You may have guessed that this trophy isn’t just going to one person as this year, the Lang Family Trophy for Sportsmanship goes to our 2023 Annual Junior Meet Team.
