The top swimmers from across the UK took part in the National Para-Swimming championships that were held in Manchester Aquatic Centre this weekend. Guernsey Swimming Club swimmer Sarah Whitchurch qualified in 4 events in this high quality long course event.
More than 200 para-swimmers took part, World, European and British records were broken by the field with many of the swimmers having their sights set on qualifying for Tokyo 2020. Some great swims were recorded by Paralympic swimmers and international medallists, Simmons, Jessica-Jane Applegate, Alice Tai, Eleanor Robinson, Thomas Hamer, and Maisie Summers-Newton.
Sarah put in some good performances although just outside her personal best times for this competition. Her 50m backstroke time has improved significantly from competing at Hampshire in February – 1.04 to her seasonal best at the English Nationals – 56.11 an incredible 8 seconds this season which is just 4 seconds off the current British Record.
Competeing in the S5 class Sarah finishes 1st in the 200m free 3:58.84, 100m free 1:49.50, 50 free 50.61 and the 50m backstroke 57.49. Great results after competing in the Channel Island Championships the weekend before. Sarah will now have a break for Christmas and the New Year with her next competition being Hampshire in early February 2019.
