Laura smashes 7 year old 100m Freestyle record

Guernsey Swimming Club held their 100m Club championships at St Sampsons High School spread over two Wednesday nights. The meet was a level 4 ASA licenced meet and electronic timing was used. With the Rothschild’s Island Championship at the end of this week this was a good time to work on their 100m sprints, especially for those swimmers training hard in the hope of being selected for the 2017 Island Games.

For one of those Island Games hopefuls the hard training paid off, going under the 60 seconds barrier for the first time 12 year old Laura Le Crass smashed Kristina Neves 7 year old 100m freestyle record by 2.58 seconds to produce a winning time of 59.72, bringing her National Rankings up to the No 2 position for 13 year old girls. Laura came first in all the 12-13 years races narrowly missing the breaststroke record by 0.12 seconds and individual medley record by 0.39 seconds but with another outstanding swim set a new record time for the 100m butterfly of 1:08.83.

Also breaking the 60 second barrier for the first time was 14 year old Charlie-Joe Hallett winning the 14-15 years 100m freestyle in a time of 59.05, Charlie-Joe won all of his events just missing out on South East qualifying times by .01 of a second for his 100m breaststroke. Charlie-Joe swam some excellent races producing good PB’s also hoping to be considered for the Island Games next year.

Competing in the 100m events for the first time Thomas Stewart came first in the individual medley and freestyle and Yannick Gaudion claimed the backstroke.

There was strong competition in the 12-13 years boys events with some very close races the boys battled it out to finish first. Samuel Lowe managed to win the butterfly, individual medley and the freestyle event with Ronny Hallett claiming the Breaststroke and Joshua Stephens the backstroke.

Abigail Stephens almost managed a clean sweep in the 10-11 years winning the Butterfly, backstroke, individual medley and the freestyle producing some excellent swims and PB’s unfortunately for her Flo Wenlock swam an outstanding breaststroke winning the event. It was a different story for the 10-11 year boys with a strong performance by Luke Le Cras to win all of his races outright.

In the 14-15 Girls ages group Isabelle Gaudion won the individual medley, freestyle, butterfly and backstroke events with Eileen Chapman winning the breaststroke. For the Senior Girls Amy Ryan won the individual medley, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly events with Aimee Bran taking the freestyle. Ben Lowndes made a clean sweep of all the senior men’s events.

Master swimmers Claire Hyland nee Hudson, Clare Le Prevost, Paul Mason all put in strong performances, using the 100m sprint gala as race practice for the Arena LEN European Masters Championships 2016 will take place from May 25-29 in the iconic London Aquatics Centre at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park with over 4,000 swimmers competing at this event, Ben Lowndes and Pauline Hogg are also competing at the event.
