Whilst most people we basking in the sun this weekend three Guernsey Swimming Club swimmers attended the South East Regional Championships being held over 4 days at the High Wycombe Leisure Centre. This high level long course meet received 3622 individual entries and therefore with a very full programme finishing with finals on the Bank holiday evening.
Laura Le Cras took the silver in the 15 years 50m Butterfly, having swam an exceptional race in the heats in a new personal best time of 29.95 moving up 7 placing’s to qualify 4th going into the final. Improving at the start Laura’s reaction time was 0.56 off the block, working hard to the 25m mark keeping her head down breathing as little as possible sprinting to the very end. Laura touched in 2nd place. Laura also made the finals in the 100m freestyle, 50m breaststroke and notably in the 200m Individual Medley where she was seeded 15 overall in her age group, winning her heat in a time of 2:31.77 to earn her a place in the final seeded 7th. By improving her split times in the backstroke and breaststroke and powering home in the freestyle Laura took nearly a second off her time form the heats to finish 5th in a time of 2:30.82.
Meanwhile multi classification swimmer Sarah Whitchurch had an extremely good weekend setting new personal best times for all of her swim taking the Gold in the 50 Backstroke, 36.76 and silver in the 200m freestyle 4:10.89. Sarah set new South East Regional SW5 records in the 50m, 100m, 200m Freestyle and 50m backstroke and in the SB4 100m Breaststroke category putting in some excellent swim producing 5 new personal best times. Sarah hopes to improve her times again at the end of the month in the British Para Swimming International meet/ World series being held in Sheffield 31 May – 3 June and the English Nationals in August.
Team mate 16 year old Charlie-Joe Hallett swimming in the 17 years and over category, with qualifying time being very tough and 741 individual entries rejected for this weekend he was not realistically expecting to make any finals, but to put in some good performances to gain long course times in the short National qualifying period. He was disappointed with his 50 breaststroke swim which was just below his entry time, however he had an great 400 Individual Medley swim a long course PB and a creditable 7th placing which should be good enough to be invited to the Nationals.
The Guernsey Swimming Club trio together with team mate Samuel Lowe are listed in the British and English Nationals and have a excellent chance to be invited to the meat with as top ranked swimmers in their individual age group. Samuel will be competing at the Under 14 South East regional championships over two weekends during May at the K2 Crawley and Charlie-Joe together with his brother Ronny will be competing in the Plymouth open meet the next May bank holiday.
