Calligo Tigers retain the Governor’s Cup at Annual Junior Meet 2018

Calligo Tigers (Jersey) Swimming Club retained the Governor’s Cup in this year’s Annual Junior Meet which is hosted by the Guernsey Swimming Club. The Junior meet is attended by four Channel Island swimming clubs Calligo Tigers (Jersey) Swimming Club, Jersey Swimming Club, Beau Sejour Barracudas and Guernsey Swimming club. Three male and three female swimmers from each club in their individual age groups 9, 10 and 11 years compete in the heats in the morning to gain a place in the afternoon finals to earn points for their team, finishing the meet with three relays two boys and two girls in each age group with double the points at stake.

There was some great competitive swimming in a highly charged atmosphere in the St Sampsons High School pool. In the 11 years 50 backstroke Sam Sterry from Tigers broke the record in the first heat with Philip Nowaki breaking it again in the next heat. Jacob Watson also from Tigers broke the 9 years 50 Freestyle record. With all the young swimmers from all four clubs cheering each other on and swimming their best Tigers and Barracudas secured the most places in the finals which would earn them valuable points. The meet finished with close and exciting relays. Calligo Tigers won the 11 and 9 year old relays and Jersey Swimming Club won the 10 year old relay. Beau Sejour Barracudas were close behind. The final team scores were Calligo Tigers on 249 points, Barracudas 191 Points, Jersey 124 Points and Guernsey 63 points.

Philip Nowaki from Jersey Swimming Club was the top male swimmer gaining the maximum 30 points not only winning all of his five events he also set 5 new meet record in some outstanding swimming. Isaac Thompson Calligo Tigers finished second with 27 points. Guernsey Swimming Club Emma Bourgaize was the highest scoring female gaining 29 points placing first in all but the 50 free where she was just beaten to the touch by Tigers Georgie Corrigan. Great swimming by Beau Sejour Barracudas Amelie Torode gained her 24 points to finish second highest female.

There were some great performances from the two Guernsey clubs, Beau Sejour Barracudas and Guernsey Swimming Club in some very competitive and close finishes. In the 9 years Emma Bourgaize GSC won Gold in the 25 Butterfly, 50 backstroke, 50 Breaststroke, 100 IM and Silver 50 Free. Dylan Graham BBS won Silver in the 50 free, 50 back, 100 IM. Thomas Pollock BBS won Bronze in the 50 breaststroke & 100 IM. Joe Lee GSC won Bronze in the 25 butterfly and Olly Stephens GSC won Bronze in the 50 free.

For the 10 Year olds Amelie Torode BBS won Gold in the 50 butterfly, Silver 50 backstroke, 50 free and 100 IM, Elodie Riley BBS Gold in the 50 Back, Oliver Russell BBS won Silver in the 100 IM, Bronze 50 breaststroke, 50 butterfly. Cameron Lee BBS won Bronze in the 50 back, 100 IM and Tara Kennedy GSC Bronze 50 back. 11 Years Katherine Bolton BBS won Gold in the 50 breaststroke, Bronze 100IM, Leanna Guille BBS won Bronze in the 50 breaststroke and Hannah Kennedy GSC won Silver in the 50 breaststroke, 50 free, Bronze 100IM.
