A Golden Trip to K2

Guernsey Swimming Club sent three swimmers to the ASA South East Regional Age Group Championships held at the K2 in Crawley. Samuel Lowe and Laura Le Cras traveled to the first weekend competing in a number of events. Lowe has been making improvement’s all season and this weekend was no exception. Swimming in the 13yr age group, Lowe made the final for the 200m freestyle placing him 7th recording a new LC time of 2.14.64. Following this race was the 50 butterfly, where he finished third in the heats in a great long course personal best time of 30.72 placing him 9th overall. He also finished 13th in the 1500m freestyle, 21st in the 100m freestyle, 18th in the 50m backstroke and 15th in the 400m individual medley. Swimming in the 14yr age group Laura Le Cras was on top form making the most of her time in the 50m pool. Laura’s most successful event of the weekend came in the 50m Freestyle where she posted 28.01 the fastest time in the heats. She then won the final taking the Gold medal in a new long course PB time of 27.83. She also made the finals for the 200m IM in new PB time of 2.30.63 placing 4th an event she is swimming at the island and youth commonwealth games. She also finished 11th in the 100m Butterfly and 13th in the 50 Breaststroke.

The second weekend Abigail Stephens joined them to make her debut at these championships, swimming for the first time in a 50m pool. This didn’t faze her doing well in her 50m backstroke race, placing second in her heat in a new time of 35.79 and 12th overall in the 12yr age group from a strong field of 37 swimmers.

Samuel continued to better his times in the remainder of his events. 200IM 2.34.50 placing 14th, 200m butterfly 2.36.46 placing 10th, 100m backstroke 1.14.42, 50m freestyle 29.32, 200m backstroke 2.37.83, 100m Butterfly 1.09.64 placing 9th and to finish off a long weekend the 400m freestyle in 4.49.11 placing 14th. Laura’s first event was the 100m freestyle placing 3rd in the heat going 1.00.89 she narrowly missing out on a medal position in the final finishing 4th with 1.00.77. Laura also swam in the 200m Freestyle 2.16.70 placing 14th, 100 breaststroke 1.21.22 also in 14th and the 50m butterfly in 30.66 placing 11th. From the back of these swims Le Cras has qualified to swim at the British Nationals for 50 free this summer and also English nationals for 100m Free 50m Fly and 200m IM. Charlie Joe Hallett (16yrs) after his successful weekend at 16 and over Regionals has also been selected for English nationals for 50 & 200 Breast.
