Youth & Open Hampshire County Championships Report

Having gained qualifying times, 5 Guernsey Swimming Club swimmers attended the youth and open Hampshire County Swimming Championships in Portsmouth at the Mountbatten Centre 50m pool gaining valuable long course experience at a high standard swimming against competitors from 24 other swimming clubs from all over the Hampshire region.

Following on from some exceptional swimming at the Age group championships, Island Games hopeful Laura Le Cras achieved qualifying times for the youth and seniors competition a year early, although under the rules of the competition her young age would exclude her from swimming in any of the open finals. Competing in the 14 & under age group, Laura won gold medals in the 50 freestyle (28.59), 100 freestyle (1.01:58) & 400 freestyle (4.47:85), silver in the 200 freestyle (2.16:13), 50 butterfly (30.64), 200 individual medley. Also placing 3rd in the Junior, and 4th in the Open age groups (5.25:39). Bronze 50 breaststroke (37.35) and in the Junior 400 IM (5.25.39) also placing 4th in the open category a great performance following on from the weekend before.

The weekends highlight for Charlie-Joe Hallett swimming in the 16 year old category was winning the gold in 200m breaststroke in a time of (2.41.24) which is a qualifying time for Southern’s. He won silver in the 100m breaststroke in a time of (1.14.99) which gave him a place in the 16 and overs final where he improved his time to (1.13.18) and placed 7th. Charlie-Joe won bronze in 50 breast (33.93) and the 400IM (5.06.83) and placed 4th in 200 free (2.07.81) and 5th in the 50 free (26.21), 100 free (58.18) and 50 fly (28.79). He gained valuable experience in competing in a 50m pool and recovered well from the disappointment of being disqualified in the 200IM. He now has six auto qualifying times for Sothern’s hoping to gain more over the next few galas and selection for the Island Games.

For 15 year old Etienne Gaudion, this was his first time competing and swimming in a 50m pool enjoying the long course experience with some excellent swims. Etienne produced a great 100m Backstroke finishing 5th in the heats (1.10:23) to make the finals finishing improve his time to finishing 6th in his age group and Junior (1.10:09), in the 50 Backstroke he finished 5th (32.51) also making the final improving his time to (32.35) placing 5th Junior. 100m freestyle (1.02:24) and 200 freestyle (2.19:12). In the 50 Breaststroke Etienne finished strongly in a time of (39.76), 100 breaststroke (1.30:83). Some excellent swimming for his first time at Hampshire County Championships.

Isabelle Gaudion (16) also competing long course for the first time qualified for 7 swims produced some outstanding swims winning a bronze medal in the 50 backstroke (33.15) in a South Region qualifying time just missing the open final by two places. Isabelle finished 5th in 100m Butterfly (1.12: 58) (PB). 5th in the 50 butterfly (32.36). 5th in the 50 freestyle (30.49) and 14th overall, 6th in the 100 freestyle (1.04:97), 7th in the 100 backstroke (1.12.63), 7th in the 200 backstroke (2.38:92) just outside her short course personal best time.

Sarah Whitchurch competing in the multi classification events S5 & SB4 gained qualification for all 5 of the swims that she is eligible to compete, winning gold medals in all of her events producing 4 new personal best times in the process. 50, 100 & 200 freestyle (52.21) ( 1.58:78) (4.17:68 ), 100 breaststroke (3.07:48) a massive 6 second PB and 50 backstroke (1.04:86).
